Join The Little Bookshop for an evening with author Safinah Danish Elahi

Tuesday July 14, 7 – 8:00 pm, tickets: £8/£17.00 (includes a glass of fizz)

We are pleased to welcome poet and author Safinah Danish Elahi to The Little Bookshop for an “in conversation” event with Leeds-based author Sairish Hussain. Join us for a special evening to celebrate the UK publication of Safinah’s latest novel, Chasing Shadows in Borrowed Light.

Friends Saira, Areen, Ashar, and Usman dreamed of leaving Pakistan and building new lives where they can leave their pasts behind – along with a terrible secret they share. But history has a way of unexpectedly rearing its head and the past can never truly be forgotten. When the four are drawn together again they discover what it truly means to be a friend.

Chasing Shadows in Borrowed Light boldly tackles topics such as childhood trauma, abuse, mental fragility and suicide, which are unmentionables and are often left unspoken in South Asian societies. Through the novel’s complex characters, Elahi puts self-censorship behind to address longstanding taboos, which she believes can no longer be ignored in a modern society facing increasingly complex challenges. – Gulf Today, April 2026

Safinah Danish Elahi is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Iowa whose nuanced, insightful novel, The Idle Stance of the Tippler Pigeon, was shortlisted for the prestigious Asian Fiction Prize in 2023.

The event will include audience Q&A and a book signing with Safinah. Booking is essential, online or at the bookshop.
