Our adult book group read for November is Shahrnush Parsipur’s novella Women Without Men, which was longlisted for the 2026 International Booker Prize and was first translated into English from the original Persian text in 2011.
Women Without Men is a contemporary masterpiece from one of Iran's most influential writers. It explores the interwoven destinies of five very different women, each seeking to escape traditional roles and the confines of family. They come together in a garden on the outskirts of Tehran to explore what it would be like to live truly free from constraints in a world without men.
Despite being written in the wake of the Iranian Revolution, and published a decade later in 1989, Women Without Men remains just as resonant with today’s readers: it has had a remarkable journey as a feminist book. Shahrnush Parsipur was repeatedly imprisoned in Iran for her subversive writing and died in exile in San Francisco in July 2026
