Our adult book group read for September is Olivia Laing’s compelling novel The Silver Book. Set in Italy during its ‘Years of Lead’, this is a suspenseful, beautifully-written exploration of the often blurred line between art and reality.
It is September 1974 and the reader is taken from Venice to the fabled Cinecittà film studio in Rome, where Casanova’s Venice is painstakingly re-created for Federico Fellini’s epic by the renowned designer and costumier Danilo Donati. Donati has brought with him his young British apprentice and lover, Nicholas Wade, who harbours a dark secret. Who, and what, Nicholas really is sets in motion violence and tragedy of epic proportions.
