This month, we’ll be discussing Time of the Child by Irish writer Niall Williams. Williams received critical attention with his 1997 novel Four Letters of Love and writes sensitively about both rural life and themes of personal growth and sacrifice.
His latest novel takes readers to the harshest of winters in the small, fictional Irish village of Faha just before Christmas. It is December 1962, a month of perishing cold: shopkeepers are preparing for the festive season, Father Tom is ailing in mind and Mrs. Prendergast the postmistress is a font of gossip and tittle-tattle. When a baby is abandoned Dr. Troy saves its life and his own is never the same. He and his eldest daughter, Ronnie, begin to love the baby they name Noelle and a season of giving and community becomes one of secrets.
