This month, we’ll be discussing Téa Obreht’s immersive, thought-provoking dystopian novel, The Morningside. Set in a crumbling luxury apartment block on a gradually sinking island, this inventive novel addresses issues of family, human migration, coming of age and the treacheries of friendship. It’s also a testament to the power of storytelling and the imagination, told through the eyes of young Silvia.

Téa Obreht is the author of the celebrated novel The Tiger’s Wife, which received the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011.

You can order your copy of The Morningside from The Little Bookshop when you book your place and receive a 15% discount (£9.99 RRP).

Praise for The Morningside:

‘Obreht is a novelist of great skill and warmth, for whom the ancient forms of storytelling – folk tales, myths and legends – retain all their capacity to explain and mystify, soothe and terrify.’ – Patrick McGuinness, The Guardian (3 April 2024)

‘This [novel] is delicately and truthfully done; Obreht deals in big, topical and often brutal themes without ever sacrificing the artistry of her storytelling to preachiness or brute allegory.’ – Patrick McGuinness, The Guardian (3 April 2024)

‘The narrative has the mysterious, intoxicating pull of classic children’s books like “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.” Sil’s story is an adventure that is at times so captivating that we can briefly forget that it’s an elegy.’ – Sarah Chihaya, The New Yorker (19 June 2024)
